About the role Reporting to the Operations Manager, Activities & Development, with a dotted line to the Group Manager Engineering, the Head of Engineering will provide leadership, governance and direction across Skyline Queenstown’s engineering function.
This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring engineering activities, maintenance programmes, site standards, safety systems and team capability meet the current and future needs of the operation. You will lead a skilled team across aerial ropeways, engineering, apprentice engineers and luge cart maintenance, while working closely with operations, contractors, suppliers, local authorities and the wider Skyline engineering network.
You will oversee proactive and reactive maintenance, ensure compliance with relevant legislation and codes of practice, lead engineering input into capital works, manage budgets and support projects that protect both operational performance and guest experience.
Key responsibilities include - Leading, developing and supporting the engineering teams
- Ensuring safe, compliant and effective engineering operations across the site
- Overseeing proactive maintenance programmes for the cableway, luge and related assets
- Maintaining high standards of reliability, presentation, safety and guest experience
- Managing engineering budgets, stock, equipment and capital expenditure planning
- Preparing business cases for plant, equipment and operational improvements
- Leading engineering input into SQ capital works and construction-related projects
- Working with contractors and internal teams to minimise disruption to operations
- Championing health, safety, risk management and continuous improvement
- Supporting Skyline’s sustainability, environmental and governance priorities
About you You will be a practical, credible and people-focused engineering leader who can balance operational delivery with long-term planning. You’ll bring strong technical capability, sound judgement and the confidence to lead in a safety-critical, guest-facing environment.
You will be comfortable working with senior stakeholders, leading teams through busy operational periods, managing contractors and ensuring engineering standards are consistently met.
We are looking for - Mechanical Engineering Level 4 qualification or equivalent
- 2 to 5 years’ management or leadership experience
- Strong maintenance, engineering governance and operational planning experience
- A proactive approach to health, safety, compliance and risk management
- Budget management and capital expenditure planning capability
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead across teams
- A practical, hands-on leadership style with a focus on service, safety and standards
Highly regarded - A Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering
- Aerial ropeway experience
- Knowledge of aerial ropeway codes of practice
- Strategic planning and project management experience
- Experience in tourism, infrastructure, transport, utilities, manufacturing, heavy industry or another safety-critical operating environment
